Service Description
NHS New Medicine Service (NMS) Starting a new medicine can sometimes be confusing — especially if it’s for a long-term condition. The NHS New Medicine Service (NMS) is a free service available at our pharmacy to help you get the best from your new treatment. Pharmacists are experts in medicines and can provide personalised advice, answer questions, and help you use your medicines safely and effectively. Who Can Use the Service You can use the NMS if you’ve been prescribed a new medicine for certain long-term conditions, such as: Asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Type 2 diabetes High blood pressure (hypertension) Conditions requiring blood-thinning medicines (anticoagulants or antiplatelets) Epilepsy Heart failure High cholesterol (statin therapy) Gout Glaucoma Osteoporosis Parkinson’s disease Other conditions will be added over time. How the Service Works We employ a team of pharmacists who specialise in delivering this service. They will contact you to introduce themselves and if you consent, they will enrol you on the service. 1. Step One – Initial Discussion When you start a new medicine, our pharmacist will explain how it works, when to take it, possible side effects, and what to do if you miss a dose. You can ask any questions you like. 2. Step Two – Follow-Up About 2 to 3 weeks later, we’ll invite you for a short follow-up chat (in person or by phone) to see how you’re getting on. We’ll discuss how the medicine is working, whether you’ve had any problems, and offer further advice or adjustments if needed. 3. Step Three – Final Check-In A few weeks after that, we’ll arrange a final conversation to make sure you’re confident with your treatment. We can update your GP if any changes are needed. Benefits of the Service Understand your new medicine and how to take it properly Reduce side effects and improve results from your treatment Build confidence in managing your condition Quick access to expert advice without needing a GP appointment How to Access the Service If you’ve recently been prescribed a new medicine for an eligible condition, simply ask our pharmacy team when you collect your prescription or our team will be in touch with you.
