NHS Contraception Service
“Spot it early, stay healthy — free blood pressure checks at your local pharmacy.”
Service Description
The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service (PCS) makes it easier to access contraception through local pharmacies. From October 2025, community pharmacies can provide both ongoing oral contraception (the pill) and emergency contraception (the “morning-after pill”) without needing a GP appointment. Who can use the service Anyone who needs ongoing oral contraception, including combined or progestogen-only pills. Anyone of childbearing potential needing emergency contraception after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. You do not need to be registered with a GP to use the service. How it works A trained pharmacist or pharmacy technician will assess your needs, check medical suitability, and provide the appropriate contraception. Emergency contraception works best when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, so timely access through pharmacies is important. What to expect The consultation is confidential and private. Pharmacies will record your consultation to ensure safe ongoing care, but your information is kept secure. If a pharmacy cannot provide the service immediately, they will direct you to another provider. Why use the service Convenient access close to home. No need for a GP appointment. Helps ensure contraception is available quickly when needed, including emergency contraception. This service is part of NHS England’s commitment to make contraception more accessible, safe, and convenient for everyone. Please note that this service requires an appointment, which will often not be on the same day that you call.
