Service Description
NHS Emergency Contraception (EHC) Service Our pharmacy offers the NHS Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC) service — also known as the “morning after pill” — through Cumbria ICB. This free, confidential service provides quick access to expert advice and effective emergency contraception to help prevent unplanned pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure (for example, a split condom or missed pill). Who Can Use the Service The NHS EHC service is available to: Women and people with a uterus, usually aged 13 years and over Those who live in or are visiting the Cumbria ICB area Anyone who has had unprotected sex within the last 5 days (120 hours) If EHC isn’t suitable or within the time limit, our pharmacist can provide advice on alternative options, including referral for an emergency intrauterine device (IUD, or copper coil). What to Expect 1. Private Consultation You’ll have a confidential discussion in our consultation room with one of our trained pharmacists. We’ll ask a few simple questions to check which treatment is right for you and make sure it’s safe and effective. 2. Treatment Options Depending on your circumstances and clinical suitability, we can provide an emergency hormonal contraceptive tablet (EHC) free of charge under the NHS service. There are two main types: Levonorgestrel (LNG) – effective up to 72 hours after unprotected sex Ulipristal acetate (UPA) – effective up to 120 hours after unprotected sex Our pharmacist will explain which option is most appropriate for you. 3. Aftercare and Support We’ll offer advice on: What to do if you vomit or miss a dose Possible side effects and what to expect with your next period How to access ongoing contraception When to take a pregnancy test or seek further help if needed Confidentiality All consultations are strictly private and confidential, including for under-18s. We may signpost or refer you to other NHS sexual health services if follow-up care is required, but we’ll always discuss this with you first. Accessing the Service You don’t need an appointment — simply ask to speak to the pharmacist. If you need emergency contraception, please visit as soon as possible after unprotected sex — treatment is most effective the sooner it’s taken. The NHS EHC service through Cumbria ICB offers fast, friendly, and confidential support when you need it most — helping you stay in control of your reproductive health.
